Commuters confront foreigner smoking on Beijing subway

Video of a rather bizarre confrontation that took place recently on a Beijing subway train between a smoking laowai and Chinese commuters has gone viral online.

In the 22-second clip, the foreigner, who was called out for smoking on the metro, appears to be not in an entirely reasonable frame of mind. Here’s a rough transcript of the exchange:

Chinese Commuter: “Fuck off back to your country, okay?”

Foreigner: “This is our country.” (?)

Commuter: “Here is China!”

Foreigner: “It’s called the Middle Kingdom!”

Commuter: “Hey it’s China.”

Foreigner: “IT’S CALLED THE MIDDLE KINGDOM!”

Commuter: “Fuck you face…” (?)

Foreigner: “You, fuck off! You fuck…”

Commuter: “Fuck you.”

Foreigner: “Fuck me? Fuck you!”

The fellow commuter who shot and uploaded this priceless piece of footage onto Weibo says that the incident occurred on a Beijing Metro Line 2 carriage after a number of Chinese commuters told the foreigner not to smoke on the subway.

The Weibo users writes that the foreigner got angry and started cursing like a “fucking animal” when confronted and became especially pissed off after the netizen told him in English: “Put out your cigarette or leave China.”

“Studying English really is very important,” the Weibo user jokes in his post.

The netizen writes that the confrontation finally ended with another passenger coming straight up to the foreigner, grabbing the cigarette out of his hand, and extinguishing it.
